It is with great pleasure that we can report a victory for the North Armagh and south Armagh u-14 teams in the prestigious intercounty U-14 blitz tournament held in Burren earlier today Saturday 4th August. North Armagh A-team won the overall A competition while south Armagh won the B competition. Both North and south were represented by an A and a B team. This the first time Armagh have won this competition and overall the county had upwards on 80 young boys from nearly all the clubs in the county playing at Burren today. Others to take part were East Down South Down, Antrim, and Louth. Antrim had two all county teams while Louth fielded one all county team.
The North Armagh boys were undefeated ,indeed the only team to draw with them was their neighbours The south. The standard was tremendous and in a superb final The North lads won by a single point against a very strong Louth team. The South B Team defeated Antrim B in the B final.. A credit to all concered and a proud day for Armagh football.. Lets hope they continue on their career and join the all-county squads next year whereby on reaching minor level we will have another winning all-Ireland team.. It's worth noting that nearly all of this and last years minor team all went through the u-14 development squads . Congrats to all the lads and their mentors . Well done .

Here is a nice wee prayer for all hurlers. Also applicable for footballers, if necessary !

Grant me O Lord, a hurler's skill,

With strength of arm and speed of limb.

An unerring eye for the flying ball,

And courage to match whate'er befall.

May my stroke be steady and my aim be true,

My actions manly and my misses few,

No matter what way the game may go,

May I rest in friendship with every foe.

When the final whistle for me has blown,

And I stand at last before God's judgement throne,

May the great referee when he calls my name,

Say, ''you hurled like a man; you played the game.''

I'm referring to last Friday's Irish News, regarding the article about the Loyalist threat to GAA clubs.

I'm sure we all know about Sean Brown from Bellaghy, and Gerry Devlin from St Enda's, Glengormley, and many others over the years. There have been a number of devices found at local GAA clubs in the last few weeks, and the attempts to burn clubhouses etc.

I'm sure clubs are on alert after recent activities, but I would urge club members, players and supporters to be on alert too. If they see anything or anyone suspicious, they should inform the appropriate authorities. The GAA club is one of the main hubs of our communities, especially in rural areas. Some of the club setups are fantastic and serve the whole community. Many hours of voluntary work have gone into building and upkeeping our local clubs, and I would hate to see any of these efforts go down the drain because of scumbag paramilitaries.

The Mid Ulster Volunteer Force claimed to have left seven devices at GAA Clubs in Tyrone. Although nothing was found, the threat is still there. Police advised that those clubs along the loughshore are most at risk. I suppose that would be clubs like Derrylaughan, Derrytresk, Brocagh, Killyman, Ardboe, Moortown, and Armagh clubs such as Maghery, Clonmore, and perhaps Sarsfields and Wolfe Tones. The fact is, if they are intent on causing damage, theres no guessing where they might hit.

Be alert, fellow gaels.

Go raith maith agat.

O’Connor gets seal of approval
Jack O’Connor’s reign as Kerry manager was officially extended by three years at a meeting of the county board in Austin Stack Park, Tralee last evening.
It was also confirmed former goalkeeper Diarmuid Murphy will replace Eamonn Fitzmaurice as a selector.
Ger O’Keeffe will continue as a selector, having been part of the set-up with O’Connor since he replaced Páidi O Sé in late 2003.
Murphy, 35, is still active with his club, starring in Dingle’s third-round victory over St Michael’s, Foilmore at the weekend.
He holds four All-Ireland senior medals and was a double winner at U21 level, in 1995 and ‘96.
Jack O’Connor’s involvement dates from late 2003 when Páidí O Sé was not re-appointed following the Kingdom’s failure to Tyrone in the All-Ireland semi-final.
Under O’Connor’s guidance, Kerry won the Sam Maguire Cup in 2004 and after a further loss to Tyrone in the 2005 decider, reclaimed the title a year later. He then opted out and was replaced by Pat O’Shea, who steered the team to victory over Cork in 2007, but did not continue after the team went under to Tyrone the following year in the final.
O’Connor came back as coach in late 2008.
Again, he was successful in bringing the Sam Maguire Cup back home after victory over Cork, only to see his ambitions of retaining the title this year thwarted by the Down team which at the weekend qualified for the final.
His ratification was a formality, after county board chairman Jerome Conway first paid tribute to retiring selector Eamonn Fitzmaurice, commenting that he had no doubt he would ‘be back in some capacity’ in the future.
Informing delegates that he was proposing O’Connor ‘to train the county team,’ for the next three years, with Ger O’Keeffe and Diarmuid Murphy as his selectors, he also confirmed the re-appointment of Alan O’Sullivan as physical trainer. And, he announced the appointment of Joe O’Connor (involved with the Kerry hurlers this year as trainer) as weights and conditioning coach.
Conway paid tribute to the outgoing management and players for their efforts over the past two seasons, noting that it was the first August in a decade that they were ‘idle.’

On sunday watching the game I was actually desperate for Kildare to win. In many ways they have become our adopted second team. I actually turned the game off as soon as the final whistle went, I had no desire to listen to the post match reaction of any pundits. Thankfully Aston Villa were at the touch of a button and held on for a 1-0 victory against Everton. It was a timely escape.

I have always said I would always support the Ulster team in any All-Ireland Final. In 1994 when Down won the All-Ireland I went to the Carrickdale and was delighted to see them win. I could relate to Down interms of classmates, school teachers, relatives etc. Strange how 16 years on I'd prefer to go to Dingle than the Carrickdale if Down are victorious on September 19th.

When you look to the provincial dominance of our county over the last decade, the 7 ulsters in ten years, Crossmaglen winning 4 All-Ireland clubs, it's amazing to think that Down can emulate THAT teams one All-Ireland in a couple of weeks. No Ulsters, no club championships but a serious chance to achieve in terms of All-Irelands exactly what our golden era of footballers achieved. It's sickening.

Regularly on this site people often speak of their contempt for Tyrone. I never have had any nor never will have. It all depends on where in the county you are based. However with Downs recent success I can understand it. I don't think I could listen to Down men, especially those who tag onto the coat tails of success. This indeed is something which lessoned my love for Armagh in the earlier part of the decade. The true fans never bother me but its the slabbers who go to games drunk or sit in the pub and still say Oisin was MOTM whenever he was taken off after 10 minutes.

I think every man who follows sport comes out with gibberish at one stage or another, some more than others and I'll hold my hands up. However, if Down are victorious my love for Armagh will return to it's peak. Strange but true.

I actually do believe Down will win the All-Ireland because I don't see that Cork team as anything special nor never have over the last 5 years when the country seemed to always say "Cork this year." For once I hope it is Cork this year and they overcome the Down challenge in Croker. For some this may sound like a bitter rant and in many ways it is. Indeed it is largely to do with the fact that we had one of the best most consistent group of players in the country for the large part of a decade and only managed one All-Ireland. That is probably what annoys me most. How many men on that Down team would have got their place in 99-06?

Enter 2011 and lets hope Armagh can give it a rattle because in truth there are no super powers out there at the minute and certainly nothing near what Armagh were in 2002 or a few years either side of it.

For the time being Corcaigh Abu.
