both beautiful game's but has Hurley taken over football in the way its played , the way referee's referee the game and the speed of it.
I love gaelic, hurling and soccer, but I don't compare them, because for me, they are all great sports to play and watch. There are different skills needed in each of the three sports. Its unfair to compare them.
i totally disagree with the notion of hurling being the better, more skilful game. This is mainly because the skills are totally different IMO and incomparable! A 45 yard outside of the boot pass straight to a mans chest, sideline points, curling points with the inside boot from the wrong side, the solo-dummy, high fielding etc are all as good a skill in my eyes as you will see in hurling - but they are foot skills and hurling adopts equally amazing and entertaining hand skills - sideline cuts, one handed catched, racing away from a marker with the ball on the hurl etc.
Whilst I dont subscribe to the (what I see as) myth that hurling is infinitely better, I still appreciate that it is a wonderful sport.
I totally disagree with you-to me Hurling at the top level is infinitely more skilful than football-what those men can do with a hurley stick and sliother is awesome. The way Gaelic football has gone over the last few years its more like basketball than football-all this hand passing and going no where with the ball is making a farce of the game-the high fielding is going out of the game due to the slapping down of the ball, and players not able to find team mates with kick passes is growing.I think Hurling is the greatest field sport in the world and last Sunday's final only re-enforced that for me-only my thoughts but hey thats why we post here![]()
To compare the two skill levels is irrelevent as essentially they are two different sports. As to which one is the better sport, surely depends on personal perference. For me i view football as the 'better' of the two and i struggle to be captivated by hurling at times.
thats fair enough chief, I wont argue with your point of view because the topic is subjective. Personally, I dont see the two skills being comparable because they are totally different - ie hand to eye, foot to eye. Also, entertainment doesnt always equate to higher skill IMO. Having said ythat I can understand the "hurling camps" point of view, although I still think alot of the skill in football is grossly underrated.
Its all a personal thing-I've always been a Gaelic football nut but over the last few years I've started to drift to Hurling more and more-I really want to go to the Munster Hurling Final to sample the hole thing(might go next year)-I do agree that when Gaelic football is played well its a joy to watch, thing is its getting harder and harder to see it played well
Yes it is a personal choice, I would say the speed of the hurling games re. thought and action at the highest level is hard to compete against, the fastest field sport in the world most definitely.
However, football also has unique skils and is played by a much wider cross-section of the GAA community.
Doubtless the debate rages on long after All-Ireland finals have been won and lost, but, as an Ulster Gael I would have to say that hurling in our province is a poor relation and if we look at the number of real competitors for an All -Ireland, then hurling in general has to be the second sport re. participation and also aspiration.
More Counties play football and more have a genuine aspiration to win an All Ireland in any given season:(
Every Single Ball!!
Gaelic football Gaelic hurling how can you compare them .Here in Spain visualise television on the outside terrace Gaelic Football showing the casual observer/holiday maker /local resident will give it a passing glance.Gaelic Hurling showing there is no passing glance rather pull up a chair and sit open mouthed for 70 minutes.People are totally mesmerized. Aren.t we a luckly nation to have such a sport as hurling. That is what the good Lord made Ash trees for But i,m biased HAVING HURLED MYSELF
