Ulster Colleges Football & Hurling All-Stars 2011/12
These All-stars are known as the 2011/12 Football All-stars and this is the 25th year of the Ulster Colleges’ All-star scheme.
Players are selected over the course of two trial games, after being initially nominated by their own school to attend the trials.
The scheme rewards excellence in skill and in sportsmanship and a player who has been sent off in any game between September 1st and the dates of the trials is ineligible for selection.

- This is the first time that 14 different schools have made up a single selection. The school with two players is St Mary’s CBGS Belfast. Patrick McBride is included at corner-back and Kevin Quinn at corner-forward. St Mary’s made it through to the BT MacRory Cup quarter-finals after a play-off with St Mary’s Magherafelt.
- There are 6 counties represented in the team – 3 each for Down, Antrim and Derry and 2 each for Armagh, Tyrone and Monaghan.
- Omagh CBS defeated St Michael’s Enniskillen in the BT MacCormack Cup final at the end of November and have one player selected – Tomás McCarron at full-back.
- Right-half back Ryan Johnston is a double MacRory and Hogan winner with St Colman’s Newry. He was at right-half back for the 2010 win and at midfield last April.
- Dermot McAleese is only the second player from St Louis Ballymena to receive a football All-star. The first was Paul Doherty in 2003 and Paul went on to play senior for Antrim.
- Dermot McAleese’s sister Louise is a double Colleges’ camogie All-star and a current Antrim senior.
- Anthony O’Neill is only the third player from St Pius X to make the All-star selection, following James Scott (2006) and John Carron two years ago.
- 7 of the 8 teams still involved in the BT MacRory Cup have players in the line-out – the exceptions being St Michael’s Enniskillen. Terence O’Brien and Mel Boyce’s teams were knocked out of the BT MacRory Cup in play-offs at the end of November.
- 3 players – Cathail Arnold, Jason Murphy and Dermot McAleese – can still hope to land BT MacLarnon Cup medals, while 2 more – Anthony O’Neill and Barry Coyle – are still in the running for the BT O’Doherty Cup.
- In overall terms, St. Patrick’s Maghera stay ahead of Abbey CBS with 45 football awards over the 25 years.

- St Mary’s Belfast defeated Cross & Passion Ballycastle in the BT Mageean Cup final at Halloween by 0-13 to 2-3. Four St Mary’s and two Ballycastle players make this selection.
- Player of the Match in the BT Mageean Cup final was Conor Johnston (St Mary’s Belfast) who is selected today at No 10. Conor scored 5 points in the final. He is a son of current Armagh manager Michael Johnston.
- St Patrick’s Keady defeated first time finalists St Patrick’s Dungannon 0-15 to 1-8 in the BT Casement Cup final. These schools have two players each in the team, including the complete half-back line.
- Dungannon had their first ever hurling All-star in 2010 (Sean Kelly), their second (Damian Casey) last season and now have doubled that tally with Tiernan Morgan and Eamon Gough-Duffin.
- There are nine different schools included in the selection – with five picking up a single award.
- Keady’s Shea Gaffney is collecting his second award. Shea was selected at left half-forward last year.
- Also picking up a second award is St Mary’s Belfast defender Stephen Rooney who retains the full-back jersey.
- Last year saw a first ever award in hurling for St Mary’s Magherafelt. Conor McCann went on to captain Antrim to the Ulster under 21 title and today St Mary’s gain their second award in defender Ryan Farren.
- Also picking up only a second award for his school is Niall McKenna (Niall Mac Cionnaith) from Coláiste Feirste. Their first was Eoghan Ó Néill in 2006.
- Midfielder Naoise Ó Cairealláin is the third member of his family to receive an All-star hurling award, following in the footsteps of Áinle (2003) and Cairbre (2006), who both incidentally were selected at No 5. They are sons of west Belfast Irish language activist Gearóid Ó Cairealláin.
- Keady defender Stephen Renaghan is a nephew of Martin Renaghan who won a Commonwealth silver medal in lightweight boxing in 1994.
- Dungannon’s Tiernan Morgan is a brother of Kiefer who won an All-Ireland minor football medal with Tyrone in 2010.
- St Mary’s Belfast’s 4 awards mean that they pull ahead of St Patrick’s Maghera at the top of the board with a total of 77 hurling All-stars over the past 25 seasons.
- Only 8 of the team competed with their school side for the BT Mageean Cup, while 5 more were in competition for the BT Casement Cup. Niall McKenna (Colaiste Feirste) and Ryan Farren (St Mary’s Magherafelt) competed at neither level.
- There are 3 players representing Armagh clubs, 2 each from Tyrone and Derry, and 1 (Lorcán McMullan) from Down. The other 7 are from Antrim clubs with 5 of those coming from Belfast city clubs.
